After my 12th step into my skin regime - I am really just on my 3rd, feels like my 12th step..you know what I mean - my husband comes up to me and asks, what is this oil for? Correction! Not an oil, it’s a serum. Ok, what is a serum and what is it for? As I prepped myself to answer the question I thought, oh no.. I don't even really know what hype is about it - aside from coming in a pretty bottle. So I decided to do some digging to not only justify the 8 serums I have on my counter (whoops) but to share the info with you as well, since I am sure - well I'm hoping - that I am not the only one who doesn't truly know the benefits of it all.
Serums are a liquid or gel consistency with high concentration of skin nutrients that penetrate deeper into your skin. This is a great way to give you a boost of hydration, more than any other facial moisturizer as it absorbs quickly rather than a heavier cream which sits on the top layer on the skin and needs a little more time to soak up.
What is great about serums is that there isn’t a “one size fits all” formulation, it can come in many variations as it is used to target daily concerns, from dull skin to breakouts to even addressing those fine lines that are trickling in. These are a few of our favourites:
Vitamin A, known as retinol, focuses on encouraging skin cell production which allows consistent hydration throughout your skin and collagen production that reduces appearances of fine lines and wrinkles. For anyone that is struggling with acne, it is also great to apply because of its effective anti-inflammatory properties.
Vitamin E is a helpful antioxidant that repairs and protects your skin - restoring from sun damage to healing scars. Repairing and restoring your skin texture allows you to strengthen your skin barrier function to fight off any environmental stressors.
Vitamin C is the most coveted of all antioxidant serums. It’s acidic component helps remove dead skin cells and alert your skin to restore itself by stimulating the production of collagen - resulting in a clean, bright, and plump epidermis.
How to apply.
Serums are recommended to be applied after toning and before moisturizing with a cream, let it absorb into your skin, before you apply your AM/PM moisturizer. It is not going to work overnight, but you will definitely appreciate how your skin will feel day after one day. There are many different techniques on applying serums on your skin, tapping it on to your skin, giving your face a good old massage or using tools like facial rollers or microneedling. You are probably thinking why in the world do I need a facial roller? It is made from solid jade and has been used since the 17th century - known for its healing and restoring properties. Using a jade roller on your face increases circulation, decreases puffiness, and minimizes fine lines by making sure that your serum is penetrating deeply into your skin. If it’s been used for this long, I feel like we gotta give it a try. Get rolling with YUNI Jade Roller, it is good for all skin types to apply your favourite serum - apply light pressure and gently glide all over your face, upward and outward from neck to forehead. Microneedling, I know this sounds intimidating at first since you usually only see it done at a dermatologist’s office. But now it is something that you can do at home to completely change the way your serums interact with your skin. Microneedling is the creation of “micro-punctures” on your skin which increases the absorption of serums while stimulating and producing collagen. BeautyBio Glo PRO FACE Microneedling is a great device to introduce this treatment - apply serum all over your face with your fingertips and gently roll with a combination of vertical and horizontal motions for 1
